The Best Ethical Sun Protective Clothing For Kids

The Best Ethical Sun Protective Clothing For Kids

Mark Food | April 21, 2021

Dads, Mums, Grannies, Grandads - I’m about to @ you. The sun’s out, the birds are a-chirping, and ice cream vans are hurtling through the streets blasting the Match of the Day theme tune. Yep - summer’s almost here. And while it’s the absolute best time of year for kids - what with all the ice cream, no school, and endless sunny days - for anyone who looks after them, it can be a bit of a nightmare.

As a Dad myself, I know it can be tricky to remember all the parenting rules all the time - but in summer, keeping your kids safe in the sun should be your number one priority. That means a shedload of suncream, covering up your kids, and even slapping some factor 50 on yourself (well, you’ve got to set an example).

That’s where sun protective clothing comes in.

Sun protective clothes have a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating which tells you how much sun protection they offer. This rating system works in a similar way to sunscreen SPF. A UPF of 30-49 offers good protection, while a 50+ UPF is top-notch. Since kids have more sensitive skin than adults, sun damage can be more severe - so the higher the UPF, the better.

At SKiN&BLiSS, we’re all about ethical clothing for kids. Here, you’ll find our favourite hats, swimwear, and even some cute culottes - all of which are ethically made, and sure to keep your kids in the shade. Check out our favourite ethical sun protective clothing for kids below.

Hello Hossy Mini Duck Blue Cap

Just launched by our French buddies over at Hello Hossy, this cap collection tells it like it is: it’s for cool kids only. And the good news for parents is that they mean it in more ways than one. These stellar caps feature rigid peaks for maximum sun protection - no more rosy red beaks for your littluns. They also have an adjustable strap, so you can make sure the cap fits like a glove. Made from organic cotton, it’s comfortable and breathable - and there’s no horrible chemicals involved. Perfect for keeping (and looking) cool.

Little Hotdog Watson Navyskin Adventurers’ Hat

These adorable bucket hats from Little Hotdog Watson are great for keeping the sun off easily-burnt necks and faces. Made from 100% cotton, they’re designed to prevent sweat build-up, so your kids can stay cool and comfortable. Not only that, these adventurers’ hats are UPF 50+ - so they’ll protect their ears, too. You can even buy it with a chinstrap for toddlers, so they can’t wriggle out of it. Practical and adorable.

Mini Rodini Tiger Swimsuit

This full body swimsuit is perfect for making sure the tiddlers are sun-safe, even when they’re taking a dip. The stretchy fabric means kids can play, splash, jump and bomb into the pool without limits. With a UPF factor of 50+ and a fun tiger print, it’s a fantastic swimwear option for both boys and girls. Plus, it’s machine washable - so you can stash it in the washing machine with everything else after a sandy day at the beach.

Petite Crabe Blossom Bodysuit

Like the Mini Rodini swimsuit, this cute pink bodysuit is UPF 50+, so it’s great for when the kids are off paddling in the pool. This organic swimsuit is a great option for kids with allergies to certain synthetic materials. It’s also breathable and dries off really quickly, so it’s a practical swimsuit for nipping between the pool and the games room.

Petite Crabe Apple Swimshirt

More super cute swimwear from Petite Crabe! This UPF 50+ swimshirt is ideal for keeping the kids covered up without ruining their fun. Designed to be worn both in and out of water, it’s great for amphibious little critters on holidays and beach trips. Like all our Petite Crabe swimwear, it’s quick-drying and breathable - helping your little ones stay comfortable all day.

Bobo Choses Poppy All Over Culottes

No list of ethical kids’ clothing is complete without some Bobo Choses garms. These culottes are the perfect summer regalia, as they’ll keep kids’ legs covered while being airy and cool. Plus, like everything from ethical super-brand Bobo Choses, they’re made from GOTS-certified organic cotton for extra breathability. They’re a fab choice for sunny summer evenings and day trips to the beach.

Hello Hossy Stripes Cap

This fun stripey cap has heaps of kid-appeal. The jazzy goes-with-anything pattern is fun enough to make sure the hat stays on all day long. Like the rest of our Hello Hossy cap range, the Stripes cap has a premium peak and adjustable strap to help keep your kids shaded.

Little Hotdog Watson Lobster Cub Hat

We’ll just come out and say it: this hat is basically magic. As well as having a UPF rating of 50+, it has a unique coating that’s designed to repel mosquitos and other bugs, so it can keep kids safe in more ways than one. With a roll-up neck protector and breathable cotton fabric, it’s perfect for maximum sun safety and comfort. Plus, the lobster print is so kooky that kids are sure to love it.

Hello Hossy Safari Cap

Hello Hossy makes so many cute hats, we can’t resist adding another one to the list. Featuring a roarsome lion, this safari-style hat is sure to appeal to little animal lovers everywhere. Plus, with the same ethical and sun protective elements as the rest of the Hello Hossy collection, parents can’t resist it, either.

Bobo Choses Tomato Swimsuit

This swimsuit is the ideal ethical sun protective swimming costume. The whimsical tomato print is super cute. It’s made from ethically sourced materials by Bobo Choses, who champion workers’ rights in Spain and Portugal, where their clothes are made. And its sun protection credentials are second to none (yep, it’s UPF50+). What more could you want?
